Caravan Holiday Continued

Yes in answer to a query the caravan was moved on Saturday to its new location within the estate. For once I was to be spared chef’s duties for the evening. A carefully planned raid on the town for food was planned (within Lord Drakeford’s 5 mile exclusion zone of course). One of the restaurant buildings in the town had become vacant but new tenants had signed to take over the lease the week before lockdown was imposed! What impeccable timing! But it gets better. These hardy warriors were aiming to open a Moroccan restaurant. Yes you did read that right. In the middle of nowhere mid Wales a Moroccan restaurant serving authentic Moroccan food. Quite a cultural shock.

Most people would have given up and abandoned the project but not our intrepid newcomers. Taking advantage of the lockdown they redecorated the restaurant very tastefully (my spies tell me) and then announced that they would open at weekends for take aways. In for a penny in for a pound we surveyed the menu and placed an order by phone which was very competently taken and precise instructions given. To achieve distancing only one person was allowed in at a time and you were expected to collect your order at a specific time, 6.40 in our case. Cash only which was to be dropped in a tall (Moroccan) jar as you collected your carrier of food. On the lookout to avoid Drakeford’s storm troopers, with a carefully timed run I dropped Junior Management at the door precisely on time, circled round the car park and returned to find Junior Management emerging triumphantly with the carrier bag. On return to the caravan the electric hot plate was warm and plugged in ready for the containers.

The verdict. Excellent food and something completely different. I hope they survive to open the restaurant fully when permission is given. For the wine to accompany I chose an interesting Italian offering, an Ultima Edizione from Villa Farnia, a blend of four traditional grapes from the Adriatic coast. Produced by traditional methods the bottle advised decanting, something of a rarity these days, but advice I followed. Actually there was only a very little sediment left in the bottom of the bottle but in any case decanting does give the wine time to smooth itself, or “breathe” if you want to use the term. Verdict. A very interesting full bodied wine, 13.5%, that coped well with the challenges of Moroccan food but also pleasant to drink slowly on its own afterwards. So a successful evening on our journey.

Unfortunately Junior Management disgraced herself on Sunday morning with a vulgar a display of self advertisement. The electric hot plate referred to above was one of those popular in the 1950’s when entertaining at home for dinner parties. It does indeed date from that era and was originally the property of her parents, possibly a wedding present. Being well made as things were in those days it is still going strong and in use. Listening to the God Squad Sunday Morning programme on BBC Radio Two she heard the female vicar co-presenter ask for examples of ancient items still in use and took it upon herself to email in details of the hot plate along with details of her lockdown caravan holiday and evening dinner. This was then read out in great detail by the aforementioned vicar who embellished it with her own comments. Even worse than this is that it is available on BBC Sounds Player for anyone on who missed it to catch up on..

Action will obviously have to be taken on this and an enquiry is under way. The sole mitigation for her conduct offered by Junior Management seems to be the excuse that in her childhood her father never managed to get her mentioned on Junior Choice!

In reply to another query, yes when Mr Drakeford gets around to offering his version of Boris Bonking rules, I will of course explain all the possibilities it offers. Don’t get too excited about it happening yet and remember Mr Drakeford has neither the imagination nor the experience of Boris.

  1. Best yet!

You’ve inspired me to write to the BBC with a stirring account of my ear wax removal procedure performed yesterday morning. No? You’re probably right!
